Attempting to put this day into words, could never do justice to what we experienced. Nothing about Greg and Liezl is normal or boring. These two make an active effort to live life to the full, experience new things and not conform to the mold of so many others. It began with an email from Liezl to say that she and her fiance Greg, were planning to elope ahead of their big wedding next year. The main reason for this was that her dear grandparents live in Langebaan, and are 93 and 91 years old respectively. They have been married for 70 years, and this of course made them the most inspirational witnesses any newlyweds could ask to have sign their names on their marriage certificate! With the couple themselves being abroad for a large portion of the year, they didn’t want to wait any longer than their holiday home together this February. We began our day in Stellenbosch where the couple got ready together and we did some lovely portraits of them enjoying their morning coffee at Kompanje Koffie … you know? Casual. In a wooden bowtie and floral crown on Dorp Street at on a Thursday. My heart could explode from my chest thinking back on being invited into such a massive life event being done in such a low-key way. Next it was on to Langebaan where the couple surprised Liezl’s grandparents at their retirement village. That morning when they woke up, they had no idea that they would be witnessing their granddaughter and future son-in-laws marriage! And so it was, that with the help of the local minister and the staff at the retirement facility, Greg and Liezl became husband and wife under a tree on the stoep, with their two ultimate inspirations for married life holding hands before them.
